Christmas quilt for wee newbie

Ever since Suzy Ultman's critter community arrived in the shop - I knew that I had to use it for this great little (simple) quilt that was going to zoom it's way to Mauritius... Unknown whether the new little person was going to be a girl or a boy I thought better stick with oranges and greens .. just to play it safe ... My previous quilt to the same family I backed with a super soft fluffy backing - but this one I wanted to back this with a functional towelling great for coming back from the beach or bath times.... perfect for a little newbie...

Hello everyone ... I know that the winter is closing in so I am hoping that this splash of color will add a bit of joy to your day, we have had a cute new collection arrive form Germany. It contains a mixture of cottons and cord ..(I am excited about this as I love cord and personally find it hard to get cord from suppliers that is a reasonable price and also of great designs- I think that these cords hit the nail on the head there. Test prints

We have being busy doing some small test prints of our pattern that we have drawn ..The patterns have being printed onto an organic white cotton .. some came out terrible .... disasterous - and some came out well... have a goo.. Now that the difficuilt bit of the screen-burning and the first print have happened .. the next prints on the should be a doddle .... (I hope!)....

Something new

Things have being a little slow here on our blog this Summer .. but we are back now heading into an other season back in the rhythm and ready to rock .. we have some lovely new collections popping in which we hope you will all love. Hopefully also in the next couple of weeks we (when I say we .. I really mean I) will be starting to screenprint our own fabrics .. I did touch on Screenprinting in my University years so have being getting into the knack of it again.

I have being working over the summer on a couple of ideas and am now waiting on some base cloths to arrive .. I want to keep it as organic as I can so - super environmental cottons and non toxic inks .. starting small ... of course with fat quarter size pieces .. so stay tuned .. I hope it is going to be a great time for us.... here is a little snap of our current design that is we are hoping to be able to get printed in the next couple of weeks

I had a spare hour yesterday and decided to do something with the old little desk that I had saved from the skip in work this time last year.... I loved the shape of the piece and the little secret drawer and I just wanted to cheer it up a bit .. and I also wanted to use some of this lecien fabric that I had in stock.. here

New Kokka delivery

We have a great little delivery arrive form Japan and are anxiously getting our way through it - slowly but surely - Our first little treat are these cotton line blends which are always absolutely perfect for small pouches, tote bags - great for cushions, covering footstools (if you fancy it) - etc -

The next range that has just arrive is for the ever divine echino .. never fails to impress me - and to be honest I could spend hours stroking it and looking at it -(but less of that). It s a wider fabric (62 inches) - it is a cotton / linen blend also but much lighter and more fluid than the typical linen mix fabric from them - perfect for a cool summer skirt, drapes, and maybe a lush duvet cover for yourself.

Last but not least to arrive was the cutest collection of kokka cottons - always super for a dress for a little one - cushion covers and quirky treats....

I am totally in love with snow white in the red above - pink and red is always one of my favourite color combinations .....we have some other great kokka prints arriving in the next couple of days ..I'll keep you posted

At last ...

At at last - .. I have to admit that I have being absolutely useless lately .. too much tax ... tax and tax again - I wouldn't mind but I have a whole year to do it and I always seem to leave it o the the very last minute - with words ringing in my ears ... of "have you seen my P60 .. P45 .. whatever it is" and "I think that I might be missing a few invoices" but eventually it gets done and you wait for the frenzy for next year to happen again.. So blogging had being put on the back burner for a while. Anyway we have being quite busy in the shop recently getting in some lovely new fabrics for you you have a goo at and here they are

Tammis Keefe - reproduction prints

Handkerchiefs, linen kitchen towels and scarves are what Tammis Keefe is known for today because of their availability. Her signed handkerchiefs printed on fine linen or cotton were a collector's item even then during a time when the handkerchief was on the way out and Kleenex tissues were rapidly taking over. These beautiful Textiles have being reproduced by Michael Miller textiles.

Okay - I have had enough snow now and I don't want anymore .. I only went to the post office this morning ... walking ... the poor lady behind the desk nearly had a heart attack when she seen me arrive in totally covered from head to toe ... in snow and proceeded to drip everywhere .. she didn't seem impressed I may add... It is getting very very nippy around this neck of the woods
... perfect time for making and creating... we have being busy - trying to get our house sort of finished for Christmas .. there has being lots of odds and ends to finish off .. There was a very boring door opening into our hot cupboard in the bathroom .. we were trying to find a replacement but it is so narrow .. and working out quite expensive .. I thought I don't want anything fancy - just something nice
So I remembered ages ago reading an article about covering walls in fabric ..I kind figured that you could cover any thing really ..all I really needed was ... fabric - which I had an abundance of .. starch and a little bit of patience..I googled and found the link that I was looking for here http://jcaroline.typepad.com/jcaroline/2008/05/starch-your-wal.html and away I went .... to be honest find the starch was the hardest thing .. but I knew that it was better to do that than just stapling it on to get a nice smooth finish.. and I also wanted to be able to pin my brooches into it as well.. so this is what my door looks like now .. what do you fancy covering in your house .. no moving creatures please .. ie dogs .. or hubbies

I have recently being looking for new suppliers .. to get some cute supplies to sell in the shop .. Tips for working with Knits

-Always wash & dry your knit fabrics BEFORE beginning a project. By nature, knits shrink a lot more than woven fabrics.

-Always sew with a ballpoint needle Because knit fabrics are made with yarns and not threads, the regular universal needles will slash right through those yarns and cause unsightly holes and runs. A ballpoint needle has a slightly rounded tip that separates the yarns as it penetrates the fabric.

-Just go for it - you can get away with a lot with Knits than cotton fabrics - they are a lot more forgiving.

Warm wash- Do not dry clean- tumble dry medium - warm iron

Our new charm packs have being very popular recently .. with customers .. asking for mixes and matches of snippets from here and there .. the pieces are smallish .. 27cm by 22cm .. but it is amazing what you can do with these smallies .. The new bundle that I have put together is by Echino ... as all of you know - it ain't cheap . but it is fantastic .. quality and visually wise ...

My Gran always had flannel sheets .. they were alwaya well worn and usually joined in the middle .. after being cut down the middle and re-sewn .. I think that you know exactly what I am talking about as your Gran's probably all had the same as well. What I really remember about flannel however is that it was always very warm and snuggly .. I loved staying there .. Along with home made bread, the super creamy hand patted butter and the fresh from the cow milk .. the flannel sheets were one of my favourite things about staying there ..

So when I kept seeing on the wholesales list flannel ..here .. there and everywhere .. I knew that I just had to stock it .... and hope that customers will love it just as much as me . -Flannel is a soft woven fabric, of various fineness. It usually doesn't have a nap, and instead gains its softness through the loosely spun yarn it is woven from. It is commonly used to make clothing, bed sheets, and sleepwear. Our flannel is 100% cotton ... and is super soft. .. Although it can be used in sleepwear for Adults .. It should not be used in Infants or children's sleepwear. -Flannels tend to shrink about 5% -10% compared with regular cotton which shrinks between 1 and 3 percent.

Flannels are addictive. Once you're sewn with them you want that wonderful, soft feeling from all of your quilts. Flannels lay very well for piecing of quilts... your kiddies and your man .. will love you forever if you make hem a quilt from this beautiful good quality flannel delicacy

I went back to work today .. blahh .. I can't complain really, I did have eight weeks off ... but .. when I arrived home...I had not 1... but 2 deliveries waiting for me .... and this is what there was inside ........eeeekkkk...

Above a lovely new organic range from Robert Kaufman .. the colors are great and the patterns too.. nice to have a new organic range in the shop .. too.

I am loving the new flannel ... and seem to have a thing for green at the moment .. must be the Irish in me .. Flannel great for the Autumn months .. and Winter too..(not yet though hopefully)

I adore this cute Kitchy range ... the colors are perfect for the months ahead ...love em.....the toaster is super super cute..

New Kokka Arrivals

Kokka deliveries are a little bit like opening a box of choccies .. they are very tasty and wrapped in nice noisy paper and really I never really know what I am going to get ..

Most orders are done at least 3 months in advance and by the time they get here I have totally forgotten what I Have ordered ... and just hope that I still like them and they are what I expect ..

The one thing that I do know about Kokka .. is that the quality is just so good .. I know that you pay a little more .. but who really wouldn't want these cheeky monkeys in their stash?

To be honest most of the time .. I don't get to see or touch the fabric .. I usually choose form a small catalog.. where the images are very small .. so a lot of the time it is hit and miss... maybe next year my boss .. (er a guess that would be me..) .. might let me go to some of the fabric fairs and see for myself ...please can I pleaseee.......
Oh I forget to mention that the (and I don't say this often).. the domestic goddess fabric above is...... to die for ....

We have had a little week away ... in Ireland .. I have being there a couple of times this year .. over to my mum ... but a couple of new fabrics have arrived so I am going to be popping them on my website in the next day or 2 ....

Yuwa is coming

When I first started celticfusionfabrics.. I had being searching around for interesting brands to stock .. and I came across Kokka .. definitely my favourite brand that we stock.. unusual and for me - very exciting to order and to sell .. great quality .. fab designs .. okay I will admit a little expensive .. but looks great alongside plain cheaper cottons and maybe into litle patchwork .. beautiful.
But the brand that I really wanted to get my teeth into was Yuwa fabrics .. they do a beautiful range of sugar flower and English rose themed cottons .. but the type / style that I really wanted were the retro ones .. Graphic .. and bold ...

So I tried and I tried to get in contact with someone ...(anyone) who could help me and then one day I got a response .. and eventually someone spoke to me .. and there was a light ... well a very small light ... at the end of the tunnel ... even with my Irish charm it was hard to get the information out of the Japanese people. why ? you may ask. well 1. I know that they love to keep a lot of the great designs for themselves and 2. My Japanese is very very minimal, well non- existant really.. but anyway eventually success ..

and we have ordered the following from them ... I really hope that you like them .. I will keep you posted with much better pics when they arrive. I love the idea that we have a great new Range arriving here with us ....

Well ladies - this is it .. the lovely Lynne over at Lily'squilts .. is nearing the finish line with her beautiful colorful Kaffe Fasset creation.

On reading her blog over the past couple of weeks .. I realise that this Lynne lady is one very talented person .. I have learned about wonky blocks, Hexagons, double geese circle blocks .... (although to be honest - I don't really think that I am up to the challenge of that one yet) and other great info that has started me on the road of my first mini quilt .. I have no pics as yet .. but I am getting there .. watch this space.
But anyway back to the business in hand.... I was lucky enough to go to the Selvedge fair last week in Archway ... the products I have to say were "AMAZING'.. the most beautiful knitted toys and softies fabuloue cushions .. the list to be honest goes on .. and on .. I came away thinking .... yes I can do that.. that and that ... It was one of the hottest days of the year .. so our trip was finished with a smallish drink (or 5) in a local pub ... I picked up these vibrant t- towels at the fair .. Beautifully designed by the Black Rabbit.

I am very Easily pleased .. I received the most exciting package in the post today, from a lovely lady named Mary. The treasure was wrapped up in no other than a whiskas tin box .. and when I opened it - inside were these.

I came across Mary via the top drawer which is held in Earls Court a couple of times a year .. and when I seen pictures of her beautiful ceramic buttons .. I just had to buy some for the shop. They are very slim and not chunky and her glaze colours are lovely and vibrant.

We will be selling these buttons in sets of 2 I think that they are perfect for adding a touch of class to bags, Broches pins for jackets .. the list is endless ..

We are now doing Vouchers at Celticfusionfabrics .. Well I suppose that I was before as well .. but nobody had ever really asked for a voucher.. Anyway a lovely gentleman requested one for his lovely partner and I kind of thought .. what should it look like .. I don't actually have any .. but hey presto .. flicking through this months Sewhip mag .. I came across this hand-sewn card with a template .. and I thought .. that would be a great voucher card .. so I quickly whipped up one to send to my lovely customer.

8 handmade items a week

I was at a local craft fair last week .. well it was more of a country fair really organised by Oakleigh crafts fairs .. I know they run fairs all over the country ... and everytime I receive one of their newsletters .. I say _ I really want to do a craft fair .. just to see what it is like .. so I went along and there was a lot of cute things there .. and some mad ferrets .. wooley sheep and good local cider .. So I thought that the only way to do a craft fair is to be strict with myself .. I have got to make some wee bits to take with me .. obviously .. So I thought to myself -start small and work your way up.. So I kind of of figured if I could make a batch of goodies a week - I could motivitate myself that way. .. not that I need motivation- I have just get to get some sort of a system going for myself .. I figured if I could m ake 8 objects a week .. okay 8 is quite a lot .. with work and the shop .. but if I aim for 8 and actually make 3! (is that cheating).. I think that I might be doing well..... and ready for my craft fair in 2015!!!.. anyway it is worth a go.

All of these little bits were made using little offcuts of fabric that I had squirrelled away .. I just can't throw even the smallest piece of fabric away .. I think that it is a sin.

I so wanted to make her something to treasure when the little fellow got older so I thought that I would put together a quilt for her .. I failed to remember that she does indeed live in Mauritius .. so probably not much call for a snuggly quilt there .. but I thought fizz it - I have already started .. so I am going to finish it.

After much success with our great little mini cloth stacks that we have in stock I thought that I would use one of those as a bases for the .. quilt just to show .. that you can do a lot with smaller pieces of fabric. I originally listed these fabric for Blythe dolls (a favourite treasure with a lot of our customers) .. but they have gone from strength to strength and I love to mix and match the fabrics .. as seriously that is one of my favourite parts of running my little business - putting colors together .

These little budles are great for button covering .. softies.. patchwork cushions .. or any little crafty treat really.

I knew with my quilt that I didn't want anything too cutesy -- and decided on reds and blues with a dash of lime green and some quirky little Japanese fabric

So I picked out this cloth stack .. consisting of some fab graphic floral fabric by Kokka .. Alexander Henry's beautiful butterfly and trendy tulip alongside Brandon Mably's serious Ziz zag
I also added a couple of off cuts of the green and this is what I ended up with.

I really wanted something easy .. no binding on the edges .. no fancy needlework .. just bold and bright.. The backing came from a blankie that I had bought for myself - but it wasn't suitable - and it was huge - so I will definitely get another couple of small quilts out of that.

All of these fabrics we have in stock in the small cloth stacks .. so you could easily rustle up a couple of original baby quilts or mats for about £10.00

Fabulous Flannel

I have always loved Flannel .. when I was younger and used to sleep over at my Grans .. she always had Flannel sheets .. they were super soft, Snug and warm .. Our Flannel had a definite modern twist to it - Fab colors and repeat patterns. Our Flannels are not suitable for sleepwear - but would make a Beautiful mattress cover / patchwork .. super cushy cushions for a kiddies playroom.

Super Sweet Double Gauze

We have had a lovely delivery of some fab Kokka fabrics .. I have to say that buying Kokka fabrics fo the shop is highly addictive - thay have such a beautiful collection of cottons, linen mixes, gauzes and knits .. that sometimes I have to say to myself .. STOP NOW .. but theyare all sooo pretty.
These Double Gauzes are no exception .. perfect for the Summer - Light and super soft.. perfect for little people and for Quilting - they will creat the softest blankie for a new baby. Priced at £4.10 - slightly more expensive than your average cotton .. but I have to say - definitely worth it

I Love Cathrineholm kitchenware - it is durable .. (great because I have the slippiest fingers in the Kitchen) - everything seems to end up on the floor) - the wooden handles are fab on these .. bujt most of all they are so good to look at - beautiful vibrant colors and the patterns are great
